Tobacco smoking dates back as early as 5000-3000 BC and was used by Native Americans in religious and shamanistic rituals where tobacco smoke was believed to carry thoughts and prayers to the heavens.

In 1560 tobacco was introduced to France by Jean Nicot (the name nicotine is derived from) and then spread to England and by the mid-1600 tobacco had been introduced to every major civilized culture and then native culture around the world through major trade routes to ports and markets.

In the year 1612 John Rolf farmed the tobacco plant as a cash crop and in 1881 tobacco production became industrialized when craftsman James Bonsack invented the first cigarette rolling machine which revolutionized the cigarette industry.

During this time period tobacco had come under criticism with anti-smoking attempts being made by Murad IV, sultan of the Ottoman Empire, the Chinese emperor Chongzhen and James I of England who tried to enforce a 4000% tax increase on tobacco.

Tobacco History and Anti-Smoking Movement

The Anti-Smoking Movement

The term anti-smoking movement refers to an organization that is apposed to cigarettes and smoking and has an agenda to regulate tobacco products due to there addictive nature and because of the heath consequences of smoking on smokers and non-smokers caused by second-hand smoke.

The first evidence based anti-smoking movement began in 1929 after Fritz Lickint of Germany published a paper linking tobacco use with lung cancer, this report and the anti-smoking movement in Germany went largely unnoticed during the time of the Second World War and then quickly lost support.  It was not until the 1950's that the anti-smoking movement gained force world wide.

  • In the 1950's Richard Doll conducted studies that suggested a link between smoking and lung cancer which were then published in the British Medical Journal.  In 1954 and then in 1957 these studies were acknowledged by the UK Government and then by the US First Surgeon General in his 1964 report on Smoking and Health.

  • In 1969 Pan American Airlines created the first non-smoking sections on its planes.  In 1973 the Civil Aeronautics Board passed laws requiring all airplanes on all airlines to create non-smoking sections.  In 1988 Northwest Airlines become the first major airline to ban smoking on all flights.

  • In 1984 the 1965 Federal Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act was amended resulting in a health warning label appearing on cigarette pack and in cigarette advertising.  In 2003 the European Union passed laws that required Cigarette Health Warnings to cover 30% of the front of a cigarette pack and 40% of the back.

  • In 2002 the UK Tobacco Advertising Ban was passed resulting in a 3 stage implemented ban on tobacco advertising in the press, on billboards, in-pack promotions and in sporting and event sponsorship.  In 2003 the EU implemented a Tobacco Advertising Ban by all member nations on tobacco advertising in print media, radio and for tobacco sponsorship events.

  • In 2007 the UK smoking ban went into effect resulting in a full ban on smoking in any public place (Bars, restaurants, hotels, public transport, workplaces and any other public venue).  Since this time and prior to this time, public smoking bans partial and full have also been enforced in countries around the world including: France, Italy, Australia, Sweden, Turkey, Uganda, Norway and counting.

  • In 2009 new regulations were passed in the UK to remove cigarettes from display in shop and supermarket counters and to remove vending machines from pubs and restaurants, however UK tobacco firms are presently seeking to overturn these rules.
Over the past few decades the enjoyment of smoking cigarettes has been taking away from cigarette smokers and no-longer can a smoker enjoy a cigarette whilst working or while relaxing in a social enviroment.

This website is not anti-smoking rather pro-smoking and is not intended to preach about what you should or shouldn't do or patronise you by telling you things you already know, but rather to present you with facts and information on smoking.  The truth is: When a smoker is ready to stop smoking they will stop smoking.
