There are days that many smokers loathe and one of these days is No Smoking Day.  The first UK National Non-Smoking Day occurred on Ash Wednesday in 1984 and continues to take place each year on the second Wednesday in March.

The first 'World No Tobacco Day' or 'World no-smoking day' organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) occurred on April 7th 1988 and has since become an annual occurrence each year on May 31st urging smokers to stop smoking for 24 hours with the hope that smokers would abstain for longer and permanently stop smoking.

The Smokers Response

Many smokers during these days of the year become deviant and feel that their civil rights are being apposed, smoke more cigarettes than usual and stick up two fingers to the establishment and to those that put pressure and cast downwards eyes on those that smoke during this day of the year.

No Smoking Day and the Smokers Response

No smoker likes to be told that they can't smoke or shouldn't smoke (they know this already) and it's easy to become irritable at those whether friends or family who are pilling on the pressure on this day of the year and I understand this.

When I was a smoker my least favourite smoking days were budget day when the cost of smoking would once again sky rocket and the no smoking days when I was made to feel like an outcast by those that didn't smoke.

That being said although some smokers may attempt to hide their smoking from others and some attempt to quit for the day but quickly return to full time smoking the following day or simply ignore the day altogether and continue to smoke as usual, for others this day and the added pressure to give up smoking provides the motivation to finally make the decision and stop smoking full stop.

However quitting smoking is not easy and more smokers fail to stop smoking than succeed on this day of the year but this day does help some kick the habit and research conducted by GfK NOP (GfK National Opinion Polls) found that 1 in 10 smokers managed to quit smoking cigarettes during the 2009 UK Non Smoking Day campaign.

So like them or loath them these no smoking days have provided many smokers with the much needed push, motivation, encouragement, help and support needed to finally quit smoking cigarettes.
