Aromatherapy is known as a complimentary therapy and dates back to as early as 3500 Bc but only gained popularity within the west during the 20th century and is now an additional option that can be used when attempting to stop smoking.
This natural, inexpensive and holistic approach to giving up smoking is based on the premise that aromas influence the brain through the olfactory system and that concentrated plant oils can affect a persons mood and be used to overcome cigarette cravings and help deal with cigarette withdrawal symptoms. These theraputic aromas can be brought online or from most high street health food shop in the aromatherpy ailses
Essential oils to combat cigarette cravings include: Ylang ylang or thyme, each of which can be mixed with a carrier oil such as jojoba.
Essential oils that can be used to deal with withdrawal symptoms include: Lavender, frankincense or cedarwood which also can be mixed with a carrier oil such as jojoba.
Using Aromatherapy to Stop Smoking
If you choose to use essential oils in an attempt to stop smoking then there are a number of ways to get the most from essential oils. Here are a few ways to dispense essential oil fragrances and reap their therapeutic properties:
1. Add a few drops of your chosen oil to a handkerchief or tissue and inhale when needed.
2. Add ten drops of your essential oil to 100ml of water and then add a preservative such as pure alcohol. Fill a sprayer and then shake and spray as an air freshener.
3. Add one or two drops of an essential oil to the burning wax of a candle to create a scented candle.
4. Add one or two drops of your favourite essential oil to your pillow before going to sleep for the night.
5. Add a few drops of aromatic oil to warm bath water to sooth and relax you.
6. Use a room diffuser. These are cheap to buy and vam dispense your therapeutic oils into the air.
The general consensus among medical professionals is that while certain aromas do have an effect on mood and the ability to relax there is limited scientific evidence to support many of the claims made about the effectiveness of aromatherapy.
However aromatherapy is an inexpensive and versatile method with a wide variety of fragrances to choose from to suit your individual mood and can easily be combined with other quit smoking methods and products to help boost your overall chance of success and even combined with acupuncture if you want an entirely natural approach to stopping smoking.
Whether essential oils will work for you or not, they will help brighten up your mood, help you relax and help you feel better overall to stick to your goal of being a non-smoker.
